Creating a Basic Centerpiece

with Table Artist Chris Vandehey

Walk into Chris's home or hair salon and the first thing you notice is a breath-taking floral arrangement. He is a natural artist. Which may explain why he is nationally renowned for this artistry with hair as well.

You will need:

  • flowers
  • foliage
  • vase
  • candle
  • floral foam
  • floral tape
  • three or four hairpins
  • scissors

Instructions:

  1. Decide on a height. Your centerpiece will be double the height of your vase for visual balance. You want to be able see over the arrangement.
  2. Have a variety of foliage fillers and flowers to work with (pick a color theme to work by.)
  3. Cut a piece of floral foam to fill your vase tightly. Set it on the water and let it sink so that it fills completely with water. When it is soaked, push it into the vase.
  4. Use floral tape to secure hairpins at the base of your candle. Center the candle in the middle of the foam. Push the hairpins into the foam to secure.
  5. Add foliage first. Snip to desired length and push into the foam, marrying sides for balance. Vary the height. Strive to create a pyramid shape. Add foliage of various textures and colors.
  6. Add flowers next. Start with the largest blooms, surrounding the candle with blooms of varying heights for a balanced, triangle effect.
  7. Continue adding flowers, keeping a triangle shape.
  8. Trim the foliage to achieve balance, where needed.
  9. Add more water to your vase.
  10. Trim the candlewick to 1⁄4 inch before lighting.
